Take part in Emergency Preparedness Week

Know the risks, make a household plan, and get an emergency kit. Join us at the Emergency Preparedness Community BBQ - May 8

It’s Emergency Preparedness Week in the region and across Canada. This is a time to learn, plan, and prepare for emergencies. As river breakup began last week and an ice jam caused water levels to rise, it was a reminder of the importance of being prepared for emergencies.

While there is a higher risk of hazards during river breakup and wildfire season, emergencies can happen anytime and you should be ready year-round.

Knowing the risks around you, understanding how to respond, making a household emergency plan and having a 72-hour emergency kit will help keep you and your family as safe as possible. Everyone is encouraged to act this week and better prepare for emergencies.  Preparedness can include talking and testing your plans with family, friends, neighbours, work colleagues, and others.  Visit the RMWB’s Emergency Preparedness webpage to learn more.

Alberta Emergency Alert Test on May 6

Don’t be alarmed when your cell phone, radio or television broadcasts a test alert at 1:55 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6. This test is part of Emergency Preparedness Week and ensures alert systems are working. It’s also an opportunity for everyone to ask themselves if they would be ready if the alert were real.
